China will cultivate more arable land in the next three years and once again have more land for food production available. For China, a secure supply of food is the greatest challenge of the coming decade, as rapid urbanization and environmental degradation have wasted many agricultural land.
As part of the five year plan, China wants to win back 1.3 million hectares of cropland. One wants to cultivate fallow land, exact details of how it should carry out, does not exist, however.
China currently has 124.3 million hectares of cultivatable land, which currently 100 million hectares are used as farmland. Since 2003, approximately two million hectares by the urbanization have been lost. The arable land includes large cooperatively organized societies. On the outskirts of the major cities of Beijing, Tianjin and Jiangsu, the ownership of these companies fell since 2003 by up to 90%.
