A Chinese vaccine against African pig fiber (ASF) appears to be on the right track. Clinical trials have gone well so far, China's official Xinhua news agency said in a report today. A big step has been taken in the fight against the destructive disease in farm animals.
Progress in vaccine development is being closely monitored, particularly by pig fatteners in China and around the world. So far, there is no approved vaccine against the ASF viral disease that reached China in 2018 and killed up to 60% of pigs there and in other countries in Asia.
In March, researchers at the Harbin Veterinary Research Institute published that a vaccine should now also be used outside of laboratory tests. Since then, 3,000 pigs have been supplied with the vaccine at three different locations. Efficacy lab tests have been very promising, the report said today.
Now the tests have to prove themselves in practice, says Dirk Pfeiffer, professor in the veterinary institute of the City University of Hong Kong. So far, there have been no undesirable side effects.
