China's import quotas for 2021 will apparently not be increased

China on Thursday set its low tariff quota for wheat, corn and rice imports in 2021 at the same volume as in previous years.
The quantities are set at a time when Chinese buyers are getting large quantities of corn imports from the United States and high imports of wheat.
The tariff quota (TRQ) for wheat imports was set at 9.636 million tons in 2021, 90% of which will go to state-owned companies, the National Development and Reform Commission said in a statement on its website.
The corn import quota has been set at 7.2 million tons in 2021, 60% of which will go to state-owned companies, while the rice quota has been set at 5.32 million tons, the state planner said.
China is aiming for a self-sufficiency target of 95% for its rice, corn and wheat consumption, but allows a certain volume of imports through the TRQ system, where importers can buy certain quantities with tariffs as low as 1%, compared to 65% without the quotas .
China, the world's largest agricultural market, accelerated its grain imports this year and will fully utilize its annual corn and wheat quotas for the first time. Officially it is now: "The quotas for grain imports will not change".
"There could be a special permit (for the additional imports)," said one operator who refused to be named because he is not allowed to speak to the media.
