China's largest pig fattener is the Wens Foodstuffs Group Ltd. The company completed the construction of four new mast systems in Q1 / 20; twelve more are still under construction. The company's honorary chairman, who is also a congressman, said today that it plans to triple production over the next four years.
Other large investment firms are currently pumping billions of yen into new pigsties. Everyone is struggling to regain market share after African swine fever (ASF) wiped out up to 60% of national pigs last year.
Construction was interrupted earlier this year by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the meantime, however, the first systems are starting up or are about to start. The Wens Foodstuffs Group's facilities are expected to fatten 56 million pigs in 2024. The company was hit hard by the ASF outbreak last year. So far there is no medicine or vaccine against the virus. Wen 's pig fattening fell by 17% in 2019 and again by 62% in Q1 / 20 due to the lack of sows.
The four new fattening systems are to fatten 1.2 million pigs a year. Another 79 plants with a capacity of 7.75 million pigs and 260 millionChickens are currently under construction in China. ASF is still a very big challenge for China's pig production.
A new division for the fattening of waterfowl is also to be created, which would then be the third department for meat production in the Wens Group; after pigs and chickens.
