China's pork imports tripled in March compared to the same month last year. The buyers are trying to fill a huge supply gap caused by African swine fever in the country. The national herd of pigs in China was severely decimated by the plague.
In March 2020, China imported 391,000 tons of pork. A year ago, it was 127,218 tons in March, according to Reuters.
In Q1 / 20, 951,000 tons of pork were imported, which was almost twice as much as in Q1 / 19.
The almost always fatal plague reduced the pig population in China by 40% and the sow population by as much as 60% in 2019. This led to a greatly reduced pork production and record prices.
