At the end of November, China's sow herd stood at 42.96 million heads, 4.7% up on the previous year, the Ministry of Agriculture announced yesterday afternoon.
Herd size was down 1.2% from the previous month, according to the latest data released on the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs website.
China has rebuilt its pig herd after African swine fever, first detected in the country in 2018, which almost halved pig production.
Slaughterhouses with annual production capacities of 20,000 and more slaughtered 235.89 million pigs in the first 11 months of the year, 66.1% more than a year earlier, according to data jointly released by the Ministry of Agriculture and other ministries including the Ministry of Commerce.
Rising production and oversupply put pork prices under pressure this year. The fatteners' margins are currently in negative territory.
Large farm pig raising net income per capita in November was 293 yuan ($ 45.97), down 187.3% from the previous month. The value also declined by 69% from the previous year, according to the data.
