Common wheat production in the European Union and the United Kingdom is expected to decline next year as yields in the Balkans return to average levels after bumper harvests this year, grain industry association Coceral said on Monday.
In its initial forecast for next year's harvest, Coceral forecast common wheat production in the EU-27 plus the UK of 139.8 million tonnes in 2022, compared to 143.2 million tonnes in 2021.
Romanian common wheat production is expected to decrease from 11.1 million tons to 7.9 million tons, while Bulgaria's harvest is estimated at 5.7 million tons compared to 7.2 million tons.
For France, the largest wheat producer in the EU, a decline from 35.3 million to 34.5 million tons was forecast for 2022, while the common wheat production of the second largest producer Germany will increase from 21.4 million to 22.1 million tons could.
For barley, EU and UK production could fall slightly to 59.0 million tonnes in 2022, from 59.4 million this year.
Corn production would also hardly change at 66.4 million tons from 66.3 million in 2021, with a much larger expected harvest in Hungary being able to offset the slightly lower production forecast in Poland, Germany, France and Romania, Coceral said.
For rapeseed, Europe's most important oilseed crop, Coceral expects production of 20.0 million tonnes in the EU and the UK, compared to 18.5 million tonnes this year.
The sharp increase is mainly due to larger acreage in several countries, including Germany, France, Great Britain, Romania and Bulgaria, it said.
Rapeseed production is expected to increase in France from 3.3 million tons to 3.7 million tons next year, in Germany from 3.5 million tons to 3.6 million tons and in Great Britain from 1.1 million tons to 1.6 million tons.
