The winter weather forecast for Ukraine could damage the late-sown winter crops in particular, according to fears expressed today by the consulting firm APK-Inform, based on statements by scientists.
Dry autumn weather prevented the timely sowing of winter crops there. It was expected that the winter weather would make up for the deficits. So far, the late-sown crops have not yet built up any frost resistance. A sudden cold snap would cause great damage, according to the researchers. Winter barley and rapeseed, which were sown particularly late, are most at risk. In Ukraine, 7.6 million hectares were planted with winter crops this fall. Assuming that everything goes well, this could result in a grain harvest of 74 million tons. In 2018, 70 million tons were harvested there.
