Corn cultivation in Argentina is restricted due to drought

In Argentina, the corn cultivation area for the 2020/21 season is now estimated at 6.2 million hectares and thus 100,000 hectares smaller than in the previous year, when the cultivated area reached a historic high of 6.3 million hectares. It is too dry in the center of the Argentine corn belt, according to experts from the Buenos Aires Grains Exchange.
Argentina is the world's third largest corn exporter. Far too little rainfall has fallen there since June. The unfavorable weather conditions already had a negative impact on the sowing of winter wheat.
In the southern and northern regions of the grain belt of the South American country, the groundwater reserves have plummeted. As a result, some farmers shy away from sowing maize, for which field work begins at the beginning of September.
Hardly any precipitation is expected for the whole of September; more could only come in October.
