In Brazil's second-largest corn-growing region of Paraná, farmers expect yield losses because they are too dry.
The second corn crop of this season, the winter harvest, is currently being rolled in Brazil. At 60 million tonnes, it is the larger of the two harvests a year. It is referred to as a second harvest because the seed is placed directly after the soybean harvest.
The consulting firm AgRural announced on Friday that it is too dry in parts of the states of Mato Grosso do Sul and Sao Paulo and throughout the Paraná to get an optimal corn crop.
But there are also no reports on the amount of income lost, but the situation was serious, especially in the western part of Paraná. There, about 40% of the maize stocks are currently in the pollination phase and have not seen a drop of rain in the last 20 days. The meteorological services will not report any rain for the coming days until the end of April.
In the other major states where maize is grown, such as Mato Grosso, Goiás and Minas Gerais, the maize stocks are developing well so far, but more rain is also needed there.
With regard to the soybean harvest, the consultancy announces that the harvest 2017/18 is 91% complete. This corresponds to the average progress of the last five years.
