Drought in the EU restricts rapeseed sowing

The dried-up soils after the hot and dry summer are currently preventing farmers from ordering rape-seeded land. In parts of Germany, France, Great Britain and Poland (Top 4) the soil is too dry for sowing.
The drought has caused rape seed sowing in Germany serious problems. According to analyst estimates, rapeseed was sown in 1 million hectares, about 200,000 hectares less than planned.
The current high price level for cereals could also lead to a reallocation of land in favor of cereals.
France experienced the second-hottest summer since record this year. The warm and dry end of the summer intensified the problems. Soil preparation was mostly carried out under dry conditions. Not all planned areas could be ordered, especially in the north. Currently, the lack of rain prevents germination.
In Great Britain, stocks are suffering from drought and flea beetles. A decline in the acreage is expected in comparison to the previous year.Flea beetles pose a significant threat to UK rapeseed populations because the EU has restricted the use of insecticides (neonicotinoids).
Poland also suffered from dryness during rapeseed sowing, according to Wojtek Sabaranski of analyst Sparks Polska. Sabaranski estimates that Poland's winter rape sowing for the 2019 crop is no bigger than the 710,000 hectares harvested in 2018.
There are also concerns over sprouting due to insufficient moisture, especially in the western part of the country, Sabaranski said.
