Drought in Russia's grain belt

In Ukraine, dry weather is delaying the sowing of winter cereals for the 2021 harvest. The country is one of the most important cereal exporters in the world. The neighboring country Russia is also one of the top exporters and urgently needs rain. So far, however, the field work has gone further than last year.
One remembers last year when there were also delays in sowing. In winter, however, the soil conditions were able to recover well, so that the harvest this year was quite decent.
In the Ukraine, only 5% of the planned cultivation area has so far been planted for winter seeds. If the sowing is done by mid-September, the time window is still optimal. Russia's farmers already have 35% of their 6.3 million hectares of winter seeds in their soil. The soil moisture is very low in the regions of Krasnodar, Rostov and Stavropol and it is feared that the drought will continue. It will take some time until there is no water for the grain. In the northern and southeastern regions of Russia, however, the drought is more serious.
However, the situation is not as bad as the reports suggest, according to the consultancy ICAR.
