The Egyptian Ministry of agriculture bought previously from the ongoing harvest 4,076 million tons of wheat from local farmers. The world's largest wheat importer from the harvest out planned to buy up to 4 million tons of wheat of domestic production.
The harvesting phase will last only until mid-June this year. The deliveries had resulted in the intervention of the State in the last few days. The farmer received 420 Egyptian pounds (47.3 USD) for an ardeb (kg 150), after the Government in Cairo refused to pay world prices to the farmers for the year's harvest.
Now paid prices are well above the world market level and to encourage the farmers to cereal cultivation. That had led in recent years but to do so, that wheat in the country was smuggled and sold to the Government under false indications of origin.
The harvest begins in Egypt in April and actually ends in July. Last year Egypt intervened 5.3 million tons of wheat, the year before 3.7 million tons.
