Egypt: food inspections now only through the GOEIC

In Egypt, which is to "General Organization for export and import control" (GOEIC) take over the inspection of food imports. So far, this task had perceived the quarantine authority. A corresponding arrangement has been made known by the Prime Minister at the weekend.
It states that the GOEIC alone bore responsibility for wheat imports but also for imports of other agricultural products requiring an import control.
The arrangement follows the months distancing of from different suppliers, whose deliveries by caused by different reviews at the ergot stocking risked to be criticised. The quarantine authority has rejected all deliveries, which had only traces of ergot. Tenders received for wheat imports finally almost only quotes from Russia though now is to apply the common international quality standard with ergot tolerance of 0.05%.
Nevertheless, many vendors stayed away because the responsibilities in Egypt are not always clearly defined. The new arrangement includes also the option of the seller to inspect the goods already binding in the port of departure from Egyptian officials. Thus, a costly complaint in an Egyptian port would excluded.
