The Chinese Weather Bureau expects heavy rains in the South of the country and drought in the North by the El Nino weather phenomenon this year. The impact shall be but not so strong as in 1997/98, when China experienced the strongest El Nino of its history. The event will last until next autumn and will present a medium strength, so forecasters in a report released today.
1997/98 there were along the Yangtze River the worst floods of the last 50 years. Thousands of people died in the floods and the harvest has been destroyed. This year, s should be very high water levels in the Yangtze River where the major rice - and cotton-growing regions of the country are, as well as on the Songhuajiang River in the northeast of the country, where also cultivated rice and corn. However, the bulk of Northern and Northwestern China from a summer drought to be haunted. There also the temperatures to be higher than normal in the summer, extreme heat will continue but not for long.
The current El Nino Event has since may 2014entwickelt and last year already reduces the number of typhoons (hail storms) and a warm winter. Since this spring, it has already been in the provinces of Guangdong and Guangxi, the top sugar growing regions, to a drought.
