The South African Weather Service reports today that it is possible to observe weather patterns that strongly suggest the weather phenomenon El Nino. These are to be observed for the coming winter (June, July, August) and for the spring (September, October, November). However, it is still too early to make forecasts for the harvest season in the summer (December, January, February). The last El Niño was associated with a severe drought that affected crop production and economic growth in southern Africa. Effects are still felt in the region two years later.
