EU rapeseed harvest begins

The rapeseed harvest has started in the EU. As in the previous year, analysts expect a small harvest. The stocks were exposed to heavy rainfall in autumn and insect pressure in winter. The spring was too dry at the beginning. Analysts therefore expect that the harvest, similar to last year, will bring in a volume of 17 million tons. It would be the smallest harvest since 2006.
Rapeseed is the most produced oil fruit in Europe and is used to produce cooking oil, animal feed and biodiesel.
In France, where the harvest is in full swing, the Ministry of Agriculture forecasts production of 3.4 million tons, almost 4% less than an already modest 2019 crop and almost 30% below the five-year average.
The British harvest is underway and the damage from cabbage flea beetles threatens to further curtail production after a sharp drop in sowing as a result of the humid autumn. "Early indications show large differences in yields from under one ton per hectare to over three tons per hectare, depending on the region," said Anthony Speight, an analyst with the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board.
In Germany and Poland, however, the rainfall of the past few weeks could improve yields and help to increase production compared to the previous year.
According to Wojtek Sabaranski from analysts Sparks Polska, the Polish rapeseed harvest could reach between 2.75 and 2.8 million tonnes, an increase of 3 to 4% over the previous year assuming average yields. "First crop reports show good yields and a high oil content of over 43%."
The widespread rain in Germany in the past two weeks has had a positive impact on rapeseed yields, but dry, sunny weather is urgently required at the start of the harvest, according to the German Raiffeisen Association. "If rain falls on ripe pods, they can burst and the rapeseed can fall out before it can be harvested," says the association.
On Wednesday, it was forecast that the important winter rapeseed harvest would increase by 13.7% to 3.21 million tons.
