EU wheat harvest with mixed results

The EU wheat harvest 2020 will be significantly smaller this year than in the previous year. The weather conditions were bad for the vegetation in autumn and spring. There are very different yields in the European Community. While France produces a poor yield, the prospects in Germany and Poland are much better.
There are two extremes among the major EU exporting nations. The Northwest and Southeast of the EU suffered the most from the difficult weather conditions.
The market analyst Strategy Grains estimates the soft wheat harvest in 2020 in the EU + Great Britain at less than 130 million tons. The outlook for France, Romania and Bulgaria has been revised downwards by 3 million tons compared to the previous forecast. The countries of Poland, Germany and the Baltic States could not compensate for this with a larger crop volume of 1.5-2 million tons.
In 2019, 147 million tons of wheat were harvested in the EU.
This week grain was threshed continuously in France, it was dry and those in the north had better yields than expected. The yields in France are below the five-year average on average. The French wheat harvest is estimated at less than 30 million tons (previous year: almost 40 million tons).
In Germany, the second largest wheat producer in the EU, the harvest has started in the south, and work on the field will probably pick up pace by the weekend, even if it should rain occasionally.
Strategy Grains believes in a decent wheat harvest in Germany, somewhat weaker than last year. The rain in late June / early July was still an advantage. That had no negative impact on the quality. The quantity could be 2.6% smaller than in the previous year and thus bring 22.46 million tons.
Poland's wheat harvest is estimated at 11.6 million tons, an increase of 4% over the previous year. But there is still waiting for stable high pressure weather for the harvest.
