European Union: Dryness favors larger wheat acreage

The dried-up soil complicates rapeseed sowing in the European Union. For this reason, and due to the attractive price level, it is expected that some of the land will be turned over to wheat. Barley could also benefit from rapeseed and sugar beet crops.
In northern Europe, recent rainfall has somewhat eased the tense situation.
In the first forecast for the 2019/20 season, the IGC expects an increase in wheat acreage due to higher prices. That would be the first increase in 4 years.
In France, the drought in some regions continued in September. This results in a sharp decline in rapeseed acreage. Terres Univia expects rape area to decline by 150,000 - 250,000 hectares to 1.5 million hectares.
In Germany, winter wheat acreage is also expected to increase to 3.1 - 3.2 million hectares. In the previous year, there were 2.9 million hectares, said an analyst. The acreage for barley therefore remains stable. Due to the dry weather conditions, the rape seed area is expected to decline from at least 200,000 hectares to less than 1 million hectares.
Germany has been getting more rain in recent weeks, so sowing is going well. The drought causes local difficulties, but the national picture is satisfactory.
Also in Poland, an increase in wheat acreage is expected, benefiting from the early corn crop and higher prices, said Wojtek Sabaranski of the analyst Sparks Polska. Sowing conditions have improved somewhat due to the recent rains, but soil moisture is still not sufficient in many regions, especially in the west and northwest.
In the UK, higher prices and favorable weather have boosted winter wheat sowning, but limited opportunities for weed control are causing uncertainty. Rapeseed may lose surface due to the problems with the cabbage fly.
