Extreme drought in Ukraine has reduced the sowing of winter wheat there by 10%. The area under cultivation is currently estimated at 5.93 million tons; last year it was 6.64 million hectares.
In some regions, the area under cultivation has fallen by as much as 22-25%, in the area around Kiev by as much as 39%.
In most parts of the country, sowing took place practically in dry soil. Only morning fog improved the situation a little. The consulting firm APK-Consult classifies only 50% of winter sowings as good to very good, 38% are at a medium level of development, while 14% have emerged poorly.
In 2019, Ukraine harvested 28.1 million tons of wheat, compared to 24.6 million tons in 2018.
