Food prices rose marginally in April. Prices for most cereals and dairy products continue to rise, while sugar prices have continued to fall. This is reported today by the UN Food Agency in its monthly report on the world food situation.
Every month, the Food and Agricultural Organizations (FAO) Food Price Index calculates an average price for a basket of cereals, oilseeds, dairy, meat and sugar. In April, the index was calculated at 173.5 points, while in March the market pointer was at 172.8 points.
A year ago, the index was 2.7 percentage points lower in April.
The FAO experts estimate the wheat harvest in 2018 at 746.6 million tons, which is 12.3 million tons less than a year ago, when a new record was created.
However, the cereals supply this season is sufficient to serve consumer demand. The grain reserves will shrink, but this refers mainly to corn.
