Global food prices rose for the third consecutive month last month, reaching a five-year high in December. This was largely due to higher prices for cooking oil, sugar and dairy products, as well as higher grain prices.
The FAO index, which measures monthly price changes for a representative basket of grains, oilseeds, dairy products, meat and sugar, jumped to an average of 181.7 points. The highest value since December 2014, the index rose by 2.5% compared to the previous month.
For the 2019 reporting period, the index averaged 171.5 points (+1.8% compared to 2018). The peak of 230 points was reached in 2011.
