Food security is a top priority in China

China is expected to have a food supply gap of around 130 million tons by the end of 2025 as the urban population continues to grow and the rural workforce ages, state media said on Monday, citing a report from a state think tank.
With China's rural population shrinking and farmers struggling to increase their incomes, Beijing needs to make food security a major priority, according to the Institute for Rural Development (RDI) of the China Academy of Social Sciences.
Within five years, the population living in urban areas is projected to reach 65.5% of the total population in China, up from 60.6% at the end of last year. Around 80 million rural residents are moving to the cities. At the same time, the proportion of rural residents aged 60 and over is expected to reach 25.3%, compared to around 15% in the 2010 census.
Concerns over China's food supply returned to the spotlight this month after President Xi Jinping spoke out against "shameful" food waste, sparking a wave of initiatives from businesses and local governments.
Maintaining food supplies is an important source of political legitimacy for the ruling Chinese Communist Party, but steady population growth and rapid industrialization and urbanization have put increasing pressure on the country's increasingly scarce land and water resources.
According to a recent study by the Chinese Institute for Water Resources and Hydropower Research, China's arable land use rose 15.7% from 1981 to 2016 and could increase another 14% by 2032, when the population is expected to peak.
To ensure food security, the Chinese government has tried to limit encroachment on urban and industrial areas in rural areas, and it is cleaning up polluted land and water to make more available for agriculture.
