France's soft wheat exports to destinations outside the EU reached the highest level last month, which was reached in February over the past 10 years.
The easing of the strikes against the pension reform helped exporters to process export orders.
Soft wheat exports to destinations outside the European Union amounted to 1.46 million tons. Exports of this amount have not been reached since at least the 2009/10 season. This gave an initial estimate based on the refinitive loading data.
Deliveries to non-EU destinations in February also reached the largest monthly volume since the 2019/20 season (July to June). Exports exceeded 1.2 million tons in both January and December.
Due to last month's exports, a total of 7.82 million tons of non-EU destinations have been shipped since the beginning of 2019/20.
This means that 4.78 million tons or about 1.2 million tons per month would have to be shipped in the four remaining months of the season to meet FranceAgriMer's forecast of 12.6 million tons.
Competitive prices and large deliveries from a big harvest in 2019 have led to strong demand for French wheat overseas in recent months.
During the rail and port strikes over a planned pension reform, exporters managed to maintain a high loading rate in December and January, despite traders saying that costs have skyrocketed and certain export loads have been shifted to other European countries.
Industrial action eased in late January, and grain traders reported rail freight resumption after resorting to more expensive trucking in recent weeks.
Wheat exports from France in February totaled around 122,000 tonnes shipped to China, indicating that exports continued this season after no ships were loaded in January.
Another 65,000 tons of wheat and 65,700 tons of malting barley are to be shipped to China in early March. The ships are currently waiting to be loaded.
China was the third largest export destination for French wheat after Algeria with 578,000 tons and Morocco with 322,000 tons.
Including a small amount shipped by sea to other EU countries, 1.55 million tons of common wheat were shipped from French ports last month, also the highest in February for at least 10 years.
Most of the French grain exported to the EU is transported by non-maritime routes such as road, rail or waterways.
The total grain shipments from French ports in February - including barley, malt barley, maize and durum wheat - also reached their highest level in at least a decade at 2.05 million tons.
