Deliveries of French common wheat outside the European Union hit their lowest level since the 2018/19 season last month as supplies to China slowed after buoyant October, according to refinitive data.
Exports of common wheat to destinations outside the 27-country bloc amounted to 802,700 tons in November, the fifth month of the 2021/22 season, according to an initial estimate based on refinitive loading data.
Algeria was the largest non-EU destination for French common wheat with an initial estimate of 256,700 tons, followed by China with 237,700 tons. Less than 514,800 tons of common wheat were shipped for China in October, which was the highest monthly amount to the Asian country in the 2021/22 period to date.
French barley exports outside the EU reached 354,400 tonnes, up from 269,300 tonnes in October. In August, 909,900 were shipped.
China continued to dominate barley flows, with deliveries in November comprising 255,800 tons of feed barley and 62,000 tons of brewing barley for the Asian country. Another 28,000 tons of brewing barley were shipped to Colombia and 8,500 tons to Brazil.
French shipments are being closely monitored by traders this season as the figures for France in the official European Union grain export data are incomplete due to a technical problem.
France is the EU's largest grain exporter.
China could overtake Algeria as the main destination for French wheat again from December. Traders have reported large sales to China for the coming months, while Algeria is expected to use non-French supplies to fulfill its recent bidding purchases.
Grain deliveries from French ports to all destinations - including barley, brewing barley, maize, malt and durum wheat - totaled 1.36 million tons.
The loading dates are subject to change and may differ from the monthly customs figures, depending on when ships are counted as leaving France.
