While the consumption of fresh potatoes in private households has increased by 28%, hardly any potatoes have been processed into products since the beginning of the Corona crisis. In Germany, the stocks of table potatoes from the old harvest have almost been used up and the packing station is rapidly importing storage potatoes from France and new potatoes from the Mediterranean. Potato prices for the old harvest in supermarkets were able to stay at the level they had reached, but could not improve despite the dwindling stocks.
Processing raw materials in Western and Central Europe meanwhile remain almost unsaleable, which also means that potato cultivation for the harvest in 2020 is generally restricted. Today, however, a message from France drew attention to the fact that the acreage for consumer potatoes there is growing by 3.8%.
