Future of agriculture

With the agreement reached at the recent EU summit, the amount available is now at least clear: the agricultural sector continues to receive around 55 billion euros a year; in the next seven years - the next budget period from 2021 to 2027 - this will total 387 billion euros. The EU traditionally spends the lion's share of its budget on agriculture. But under what conditions to whom exactly this money should be distributed, the ministers of agriculture of the member states and the EU Parliament will now argue violently.
Most of the money from Brussels is tied to the land and is based primarily on the number of hectares cultivated. The more hectares a farmer farms, the more money he gets. Large companies in particular benefit from these so-called direct payments (in EU jargon this large funding pot is called the first pillar, in contrast to the much smaller second pillar, which is used to finance environmental programs, for example). Smaller, family-run farms have little chance of survival and have to give up.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen (CDU) has promised a "green deal" that will also set green trends in agriculture. A new strategy called "Farm to Fork" aims to provide Europeans with affordable and sustainable food, fight climate change, protect the environment, promote biodiversity and animal welfare, and give organic farming a boost. However, this new proposal came too late to significantly redirect the CAP reform debate, which had been fierce for two years. Europe's agricultural sector is therefore unlikely to turn green too much for the time being.
