In its third crop estimate for 2018, the DRV expects a 2.0% lower wheat crop of 23.98 million tonnes for Germany. The reason for the decline is the lower acreage. The association for rapeseed production expects an even greater decline. It is estimated at 4.12 million tonnes. That would be a year-on-year decline of 3.3%. The reasons given are the high temperatures and the rapid length growth without strong side shoot formation. Last year, rapeseed production in Germany disappointed with a result of 4.3 million tonnes. The long-term average is significantly higher at 5.1 million tonnes.
In the case of winter barley, the association currently expects a harvest volume of around 8.7 million tonnes due to a 0.8% fall in acreage. Summer barley is well above expectations with an area forecast of 436,000 hectares. Production expectations are therefore up 30.4% on the previous year.
Also in the summer wheat acreage DRV expects a strong expansion to 108,000 hectares. That would be an increase of 157% over the previous year.
In April, the estimate of wheat production was 24.29 millionTonnes and the estimate of rapeseed production at 4.62 million tonnes.
