Germany and France rely on potato exports

Based on all harvest estimates available so far, this year's potato harvest in the European Union will be 54.8 million tons. That would be almost 3.5 million tons more than in the previous year and 7.4 million tons more than in 2018. What is noticeable in the compilation of various sources, including the EU's monitoring service "MARS" and initial national harvest estimates, shows France a particularly large potato harvest compared to previous years. There will be grown by 8.9 million tons this year because the cultivation area has been significantly expanded. 6.9 million tons of it are consumption potatoes. Ten years ago, two million tonnes less potatoes were harvested in France. For Germany, until the official harvest estimate by the BMVEL is available, an AMI estimate will be used, which assumes 11.8 million tons and thus around two million tons more than is usually required. France and Germany have profited from exports to other EU countries in recent years. Potato exports this season are only likely to work with price concessions.
