Contrary to the assessment of the European Potato Growers (NWPG), the German harvest and plant reporters today do not announce an expansion of German potato production. This forecast is based on a member survey.
Accordingly, potatoes were cultivated in Germany on 249,000 hectares; in the previous year it was 2.1% more with 251,000 hectares. The NWPG estimated last week that cultivation in this country was expanded by 1.5% compared to the previous year.
The experts agree that the cultivation area in northern Germany is increasing and that more potatoes are being grown for processing into potato products. This is at the expense of table potatoes.
This year's perimeter is the second largest of the past seven years. But if that means too much potatoes again, it will not be until late summer. The yields per hectare have risen steadily in recent years. Last year, a new record was set.
