Grain corn production in France drops below 12 million tonnes

Grain corn production in France declined 12% to 11.8 million tonnes this year, as drought limited yields. Some farmers now use the corn as food for their animals.
Some market participants had expected an even lower harvest, but with some irrigating and more drought-resistant varieties, the result was better than expected.
The average yield is given as 9.32 tons / hectare (previous year: 10.36 to / ha). The five-year average is 9.6 to / ha.
In France, there were extreme regional differences ranging from 7 to 11 tonnes / hectare. The acreage has been reduced this year by 50,000 - 70,000 hectares, depending on where feed corn is from. Because grassland yields are so weak regionally, farmers are looking for corn as feed.
