French agricultural market analyst Strategie Grains expects the 2020 soft wheat harvest in the EU to be smaller than this year. Durum wheat and barley harvests, on the other hand, may be larger.
Experts estimate the 2020 soft wheat harvest at 140.5 million tons. This would be 5.3 million tons or 3.6% less than this year. The reason given is a smaller area under cultivation.
Heavy rainfall in recent months interrupted field work, mainly in France and the UK.
By contrast, experts expect a larger maize harvest of 67.1 million tons in 2020, compared to 63.5 million tons this year. It is assumed that the drought and heat of the last two years will not be repeated.
The 2020 durum harvest could therefore rise to 8 million tons (previous year: 7.6 million tons), while the barley harvest would also be slightly larger at 62.2 million tons.
Total grain production in the EU in 2020 would therefore be slightly higher at 310.1 million tons compared to 309.8 million tons this year.
