Great Britain: Rapeseed harvest down 39%

This year's rape harvest in the UK is tentatively forecast by the UK Department of Agriculture to be 1.07 million tonnes, a 39% decrease from last season. The decline is partly due to a 27% smaller acreage, as the damp weather in autumn 2019 prompted many farmers to switch to summer crops. In Great Britain, rapeseed is predominantly a winter crop. Yields were also lower, averaging 2.8 tonnes per hectare, a 16% decrease from 3.3 tonnes in the previous season. Rapeseed production has declined by more than half since 2017. Many farmers have turned their backs on crops due to extensive problems with flea beetles after banning some widely used insecticides to protect bees. The ministry released its first estimates for wheat and barley crops earlier this week.
