The Iranian government agency Government Trading Corporation (GTC) is said to have bought around 240,000 tons of milling wheat in a tender closed on Wednesday, European traders announced today.
It is believed that at least four shipments of around or just over 60,000 tons were purchased for transport to Iranian ports.
The tender sought 180,000 tonnes for shipment in January and February, including some for transport across the Caspian Sea and for land transport by rail.
The volumes in Iran's tenders are nominal and the country regularly buys more than the tonnage originally sought.
The GTC is said to have bought around 500,000 tons of milling wheat in its last wheat tender last week.
The state-run Iranian animal feed importer SLAL also bought around 300,000 tons of feed maize in a separate tender this week, European traders also announced today.
Iran must import around 8 million tons of wheat after its crops were damaged this summer by the worst drought in 50 years, Reuters reported in October.
But Western sanctions against Iran continue to make payments difficult, traders said.
Iran announced on November 19 that it had imported 4 million tons of wheat since the end of April.
