The Iranian government agency GTC has published an international tender to buy around 180,000 tons of milling wheat, European traders announced today. Tomorrow, December 15th. the offer period for it ends.
The tender aims at different delivery methods. We are looking for two 60,000-tonne shipments for sea transport to the seaports on the Iranian Gulf. Another 30,000 tons are being sought for transport across the Caspian Sea, which could favor Russian wheat, traders said. Another 30,000 tons are to be delivered by rail, which would favor wheat from Kazakhstan, it said.
Delivery of all of the wheat is targeted for January and February 2022.
The volumes in Iran's tenders are nominal and the country regularly buys more than the tonnage originally sought.
Iran has to import around 8 million tons of wheat after its crops suffered from the worst drought in 50 years this summer, Reuters reported in October.
Western sanctions against Iran continue to make payments difficult, traders said.
Iran announced on November 19 that it had imported four million tons of wheat since the end of April.
