Lean wheat crop in Romania

Romania expects a lean wheat harvest of 5.5 - 5.6 million tons this year. That would be a 42% decrease from the previous year. The reason is the extreme drought, which leads to a sharp drop in average yields to 2.9 tons per hectare, according to Agriculture Minister Adrian Oros.
Romania is the second largest grain seller in the EU. Romania, France and Russia are the largest grain suppliers to the Middle East. The largest customer in the region is Egypt.
Around 89% of the stocks are harvested in Romania. The rainfall that fell in the past two weeks came too late for a recovery in stocks. Last year the average yield was 4.8 tons per hectare.
