While EU-27 wheat exports are well above the level of the previous year, the volume of European barley exports has fallen significantly. Up to the 38th calendar week of the current marketing year, 22.13 million tons of common wheat (+1.60 million tons compared to the previous year) and 4.32 million barley (- 1.85 million tons) were exported. After France, Germany is Europe's largest barley exporter. Of the 4.32 million tons of barley, 2.01 million tons come from France and 1.12 million tons from Germany. As in previous financial years, Germany is the third largest exporter of wheat within the EU with a volume of 2.59 million tons. Only Romania with 2.76 million tons and France with 8.69 million tons exported more wheat. The weaker barley demand is mainly due to China. If the Chinese imported 2.31 million tons in 2021/22, it was only 1.2 million tons in 2022/23. Saudi Arabia, on the other hand, has more than doubled EU barley imports.
