The milk price negotiations between Europe's largest dairy group Lactalis and French farmers failed last Friday.
The privately-owned company agreed to on Tuesday of last week of a renegotiation over the price of milk paid out, after hundreds of farmers besieged the business headquarters of the company to enforce a higher price. Lactatis should pay lower prices than the competition.
The farmers ended the demonstration yesterday without result and announced now national protests against the dairy. Since Monday, hundreds of farmers with tractors and cows from the headquarters in Northern France were drawn. Now, products should be demonstrated also in supermarkets against Lactatis -.
The company produces mainly cheese, milk and butter. The brands are President, Galbani and Lactel.
Everywhere in Europe, the dairy farmers suffer low producer prices for milk supplies. There is a large surplus, since the milk quota in the EU was abolished last year. That coincided with the Russian ban for European agricultural products as a result of EU sanctions after the Russian annexation of the Ukraine as well as a weak demand for milk products China.
The French dairy farmers call for an average price of 290 euro per 1000 litres of milk for 2016 and relied on the forecasts of the European Union, that 335 euros will be paid until the end of the year.
Lactatis paid last 257 Euro / 1.000 litres and had offered a year average price of €269 / 1000 litres to pay. That was rejected by the protesters on Friday.
