In Holland, almost all the potatoes have now been harvested. The quality of what is still in the ground has been so badly affected that the supply situation, which is actually tight, is being overshadowed. The batches that were recently harvested and stored under difficult conditions must now be processed quickly. This could prevent prices from rising in the coming weeks.
The conditions for firmer prices in the medium term are quite good. Sales of EU potato products on the world market are running at full speed. The recently added processing lines are also working at full capacity. In addition, consumer potatoes from Western and Central Europe can be steadily exported to Eastern Europe. The UK is also buying on the European mainland to replace its harvest losses after an extremely wet fall. In North America, the chip factories in the US-Canada border region are undersupplied with processing raw materials following crop losses. Many newly built plants without potatoes are at a standstill. The transportation of raw materials from the East to this huge country is not worthwhile and America will hardly be able to offer French fries on the world market this year. Suppliers from the EU will know how to take advantage of this.
