Potato harvest in western Europe is delayed

While the potato harvest is almost complete in this country, it will still take a while in western Europe until all the potatoes are pulled out of the ground. The many rain showers in recent weeks have caused problems for the harvest on the cohesive soils. In the past few weeks, around 150 liters of rain had fallen in Holland's coastal regions. The storage of potatoes is far behind compared to previous years. In Belgium the situation is even more dire. According to FIWAP, only 10% of the main harvest had been harvested there by October 9th. The association warns of a harvest that would cause quality problems. After all, the sprout inhibitor CIPC is no longer available and potatoes of inferior quality would probably have to be disposed of anyway, as this year's harvest in Europe exceeds demand. However, if the potatoes in Holland and Belgium do not all come out of the ground, the situation could still ease in the end. Fluctuating prices on the futures exchange reflect the mood of the farmers.
