The prices for processed potatoes for the delivery date of April 2019 are now back to their highest level on May 22. A week ago, the price rose to 17 € / dt and decayed the following days but again. Such high volatility is typical for this time of year as market participants are under the influence of mid-summer May temperatures, with some deriving a smaller harvest.
This is not what the MARS EU harvest assessment agency thinks, in their report last week, experts report strong potato growth due to the warm April and May. Despite the late planting dates in Western Europe, field crops are now developing normally. Considering the current weather conditions, the potato yield is estimated to be 2.7% higher than in the 5-year average - according to the statistics.
