Rape seed: Decrease of the acreage in France

Dry weather has hampered the rapeseed in parts of the European Union in the summer. Due to the relatively attractive prices for canola seed, the planned planting area in the European Union of 6.5 million hectares (previous year) rose to 6.7 million hectares. However, not all areas could be ordered due to the dry conditions. That could limit the probability of expected recovery of rape seed production of a 4-year low this year (19.9 million tons).
In France traders and analysts estimate the sowing area for rape seed on 1.4 million acres because the drought has parched the soil in summer. That would be a decline of 7%. A part of which stocks is a poor condition and is very susceptible to frost and pests. In September the ODA group consulting firm estimated the proportion of rape seed stocks that are in poor condition, 10%. In these plants, there is the probability that they do not come through the winter.
Also in parts of Germany, the rape seed stocks suffered from the drought. In General, the situation was but incomparably better than in France. Seed sales in Germany were at the level of the previous year by 1.3 million hectares. The prices were low, but compared to the wheat prices relatively attractive at the time of sowing decision.
In Poland, the acreage for canola seed by 3% to 6% will rise to 820,000-850,000 hectares.
The British acreage will fall by 2-3%. The considerable damage caused infestation passed years.
