Regeneration of US wheat is being challenged after hurricanes

Hurricane-force winds that swept the U.S. Plains Belt last week appeared to have done varying amounts of damage to a winter wheat crop already struggling with arid conditions, crop watchers in Kansas said.
Young wheat plants have been blown straight from the ground in the hardest hit fields, but the remaining wheat may be able to recover, especially if the plant's canopy has been protected just below the surface of the soil. That said, the crop is in dire need of moisture, but short-term predictions look dry.
In some cases one speaks of total failures, but most areas could still regenerate.
Kansas is the largest producer of winter red durum wheat, the largest US grade of wheat that is ground into bread flour. With global food prices at a 10-year high, traders are watching the crop outlook in the United States, one of the world's leading suppliers of wheat.
Last Wednesday's unusual storm brought "dust bowl" conditions and gusts of more than 100 mph (161 km / h) to parts of the Plains, said weather forecasters, reminiscent of the US drought years of the 1930s.
White and stripped of leaves, some wheat this week appeared to have been damaged by static electricity from blown dust, a phenomenon that was more common in the Dust Bowl years, Haag said.
Farmers should have a better idea of the consequences in about 10 days. However, plants' greatest need is for moisture and possibly fertilizer, both of which are scarce.
"Given the current conditions and forecasts, and the high fertilizer prices and availability concerns this spring, all the components of the wheat rebound cocktail we need are (are) in question," said Justin Gilpin, executive director of the Kansas Wheat Commission, in a market note.
