Romania's corn harvest could fall by around 40%

Romania's 2020 corn harvest could fall by more than 40% year-on-year (16.96 million tons) to 10.2 million tons as a result of the persistent drought, the Romanian Ministry of Agriculture reports today.
"Due to a pedological drought since the fall of 2019, the soil reserve was dehydrated in the optimal corn sowing time," the ministry said in a statement emailed to Reuters.
Romania harvested 16.96 million tons of corn in 2019.
Hot, dry weather is also putting a strain on corn crops at large producer France and could curb an expected increase in European production this year after farmers sow more grain.
