Russia's Agriculture Ministry plans to set a quota of 20 million tons for grain exports in the first half of 2020, Interfax news agency reports today, referring to a draft from the Agriculture Ministry.
This follows comments from the Agriculture Ministry last month that Russia, the world's largest wheat exporter, is looking for a new way to limit grain exports to the level of the country's exportable surplus under "certain market conditions".
The Ministry of Agriculture's draft, which has yet to be reviewed by the government, envisages a quota of 20 million tons of grain in the period from 1 January to 30 June 2020. The ministry itself declined to comment.
In the 2019/20 marketing season, which began on 1 July 2019 and ends on 30 June 2020, Russia expects to export 45 million tons of grain, including 36 million tons of wheat.
According to customs data, Russia exported 23.7 million tons of grain, including 20.6 million tons of wheat, between the start of the 2019/20 season on 1 July and 10 January. Total grain exports fell by 18% compared to the previous year.
