Russia Seeks New Markets (Part 3)

While Russia's wheat deliveries for Iraq and Nigeria would pose a great risk to Americans, Russian competition threatens the EU in Algeria and Saudi Arabia.
If Russia's wheat were to gain market access for Algeria, it would be like an earthquake in the EU, especially for France. So far, however, Russia is not permitted as a wheat supplier in Algeria, because Algerian buyers attach great importance to a small fraction of broken grains. So far the Russians can not afford that.
A similar disaster would be if Saudi Arabia fails for the supplying countries Germany, Poland and the Baltic states. Again, the Russians could not meet the high quality requirements of the customers.
Algeria's neighbors Tunisia, Libya and Morocco buy Russian wheat. Russia also wants to increase its grain deliveries to Jordan and Nigeria.
80% of French third country wheat exports went to Algeria this year. However, traders fear that Algeria might soon change its wheat import specifications in favor of Russia.
Russia's exporters are also major suppliers of grain to Egypt, Turkey, Bangladesh and Vietnam. These regular customers should receive at least the same volumes as in the previous year, although the Russian harvest this year was 10 million tons smaller than in 2017.
Now Russia also sends grain samples to Saudi Arabia. One can only hope that the analyzes are not too good.
