The Russian beet sugar production will reach a new record of 6.6 million tonnes in 2017/18. In the previous season it was 6.2 million tons, according to the Association of Russian Sugar Producers.
Russia is increasing sugar production to become independent of imports. Over the past ten years, production has doubled and sugar has already been exported to neighboring countries in Asia.
By December 28, Russia produced 6 million tons of sugar from this year's beet harvest. That's 500,000 tons more than a year ago. 32 sugar refineries in the country have already completed the beet processing this season, with another 43 plants working all year round.
The acreage for sugar beet will decrease by 10 to 15% to 1.1 to 1.2 million hectares in 2018, according to consulting firm IKAR. The reason for this is the low prices on the world market.
