After ruthless threats by US President Donald Trump yesterday against China, Beijing warns that talks about overcoming a trade war will fail if the US does not return to a serious diplomatic negotiation.
The unexpectedly harsh tone of the US, China now with punitive tariffs for the import of want to overdraw products worth $ 50 billion, angered the Chinese deeply.
This tough US stance is linked to the upcoming talks with North Korea leader Kim Jong Un on June 12. It is essentially about who in the East Pacific, in the future has the supremacy, the US or China.
The escalation of the trade dispute comes after the second round of talks in mid-May in Washington, China, the Chinese negotiator agreed to buy more US products to reduce the US trade deficit. The next meeting in Beijing on 2 to 4 June was supposed to be about concrete quantities.
The Chinese foreign minister had hoped that the joint statement would now be implemented, instead Trump announced resolutely and unequivocally yesterday to defend US interests without compromise.
Now the agricultural lobbyists in the US are again worried about their sales to China. Various association representatives have already auditioned in the White House.
Observers comment that Trump's bargaining tactics take some getting used to, but perhaps he succeeds. The threat of punitive duties was at least partially successful. Without serious economic pressure there would be no serious negotiations with the Chinese.
China's state-run press Xinhua expresses its desire that the US should no longer be so impulsive to defend its interests. China, for its part, will negotiate pragmatically with the US delegation, hoping for a joint statement after the next round of negotiations.
