The sowing for the Brazilian soybean harvest 2021/22 reached 94% of the planned area last Thursday. Field work is progressing well in most parts of the country, although a recent lack of rain has put farmers on alert in some southern states, agribusiness consultancy AgRural said today.
According to AgRural, the percentage of national plantings increased by 4 points compared to the previous week, above the 90% that were planted at the same time in 2020/21.
However, field work in southern states such as Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina are affected by drought, the report said. In Mato Grosso do Sul and Sao Paulo there is a risk of losses if the dry weather persists.
In November, rainfall fell below historical averages and forecasts for the first half of December in these states are also pessimistic, AgRural said.
Although there are individual issues related to lower humidity and higher temperatures, farmers are watching out for possible problems with soybean germination, according to the consultancy.
“On the other hand, the harvest is progressing very well in the rest of the country. The harvest in some areas of Mato Grosso is expected to start around Christmas, ”said AgRural, which currently estimates Brazil's soybean harvest in 2021/22 at 144.3 million tons.
For the country's first corn harvest in 2021/22, according to AgRural, sowing reached 94% of the forecast area in the center-south region, compared with 93% in the previous week and 96% a year earlier.
The advisors note that Rio Grande do Sul still faces potential losses as the hot, dry weather is expected to continue this month. It could also affect some corn areas in Santa Catarina and Paraná, AgRural said.
