The agricultural consulting firm strategy of grains has raised its forecast of the 2016er soft wheat harvest in the European Union to 1.2 million tonnes to 145.5 million tonnes (previous year: 151 million tonnes) reduced. The reduction is justified in particular with the adverse weather conditions in France, the EU's largest wheat producer. Exports in the marketing year 2016/17 are estimated at 29 million metric tons (minus 900,000 tons for the previous forecast).
For France, Scandinavia, Spain, the Benelux countries, and Poland is expected to decline by a total of 2.7 million tonnes. That is partially offset by an increase of 1.5 million tonnes in Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, of Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Italy and Greece.
Poor yields and qualities are expected due to the heavy rains and the lack of Sun in France. In contrast, strong revenue generation emerge in southern of Europe as well as in Central and Eastern Europe. In Germany and the United Kingdom (top 2 and top 3 producers in the EU) the conditions are also better than in France.
